Cardiac assessment

Protect your heart, preserve your vitality.

The cardiovascular assessment aims to identify risk factors and abnormalities requiring follow-up.

Assessing cardiovascular risk

High blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol, excess weight, a sedentary lifestyle and family history increase cardiovascular risk. The assessment aims to measure this risk and to look for existing, often silent, damage.

The assessment always combines a clinical examination, blood pressure measurement and laboratory tests (lipids, blood sugar, kidney function) with the cardiac tests.

First-line tests

Blood pressure measurement

Taken in the consulting room and compared, if necessary, with home self-measurement. It shapes a large part of the prevention strategy.

Resting electrocardiogram (ECG)

It records the electrical activity of the heart and can reveal a rhythm disorder, signs of hypertrophy, the after-effects of a heart attack or a conduction abnormality.

Echocardiography

A cardiac ultrasound assesses the structure and function of the heart: contraction of the ventricles, valve function, size of the chambers, pulmonary pressures and the pericardium.

Additional tests, on indication

Exercise stress test

An ECG recorded during gradually increasing exercise. It looks for coronary insufficiency, assesses exercise tolerance and may precede a return to sport.

24-hour Holter ECG

Continuous recording of the heart rhythm over one or more days, indicated for palpitations or dizzy spells, or to document an intermittent rhythm disorder.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)

Blood pressure measured over 24 hours during normal daily activities. It confirms high blood pressure, identifies “white coat” hypertension and checks that a treatment is working.

Arterial Doppler ultrasound

Examination of the arteries of the neck and legs. It looks for atheromatous plaques and narrowing of the arteries, often before any symptoms appear.

Specialised imaging tests

Coronary CT, calcium score, cardiac MRI or scintigraphy may be offered in selected situations, as decided by the cardiologist.
