From 1 to 7 May 2023, Owendo University Hospital organised a neurosurgery caravan with Sevamed of Morocco: 21 patients had already undergone surgery by 4 May.
From 1 to 7 May 2023, Owendo University Hospital (CHUO) in Gabon organised a neurosurgery surgical caravan. The operation was organised by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, in partnership with the Sylvia Bongo Ondimba Foundation, the Eramet group (owner of the Compagnie minière de l’Ogooué, Comilog) and Sevamed of Morocco.

A caravan in several stages
It began on 1 May with a special consultation session to identify new patients, with a view to scheduling a second edition as soon as possible.
On 4 May, the Minister of Health and Social Affairs, Guy Patrick Obiang Ndong, accompanied by Justine Libimbi-Mihindou, visited the CHUO to see how the caravan, due to end on 7 May, was progressing. He said he was “quite satisfied with the caravan, but also with Owendo University Hospital, which has strengthened its technical facilities”.
Initial results, as of 4 May 2023
- 21 patients diagnosed and operated on: 18 spinal conditions and 3 brain tumours.
- Operations performed by Gabonese neurosurgeons, in the presence of Moroccan specialists.
- According to the Ministry of Health, significant savings for the CNAMGS, particularly on medical evacuations.
- Strengthened technical facilities for the CHUO: operating theatre, anaesthesia and intensive care department, and functional rehabilitation unit.
These figures are those of 4 May 2023, while the caravan was under way: the final results are not reported here.
