Brachytherapy
A form of radiotherapy in which the radiation source is placed in contact with the area to be treated.
About the specialty
Brachytherapy places a radioactive source as close as possible to the tumour, temporarily or permanently, to deliver a high dose to a limited area.
The indication is decided by the radiotherapy team. Polycrabat Sevamed directs the patient and coordinates their stay.
Main conditions treated
- Certain gynaecological cancers
- Certain prostate cancers
- Certain skin cancers
- Combination with external radiotherapy
- Additional treatment after surgery
- Situations decided at a multidisciplinary meeting
Tests, techniques and procedures
The techniques used and their indication are decided by the doctor, case by case. As a general guide:
- Radiotherapy consultation
- Planning imaging
- Placement of the source
- Check-up and follow-up
Depending on the medical indication, the technique concerned is offered within the Polycrabat Sevamed network. Its availability in a specific facility is confirmed by the coordination team on a case-by-case basis.
